Minteq International Inc., a subsidiary of Minerals Technologies Inc., produces a range of monolithic refractory products for the iron and steel, aluminum, glass, and other thermal industries. MMinteq’s products are made of either magnesia or alumina. Minteq does not produce chrome-based monolithic refractories.
Refractories are heat-, chemical-, and wear-resistant materials used to line high-temperature furnaces and reactors.
MINTEQ® refractory products save energy both during their manufacture and their installation.
There are two categories of refractory products:
- fired bricks and shapes and
- monolithic refractories.
Monolithic refractories do not require pre-firing, thus reducing the amount of energy used (and associated pollution) compared to producing fired refractories.
Monolithic refractories may be applied when the furnace, ladle, or other surface is hot. The Minteq Steel Mill Service group is able to apply specifically designed refractory products onto these surfaces between heats or batches of steel. This allows the customer to continue operating the equipment rather than shutting it down and going through a long cool-down and reheating process to repair the underlying brick or cast refractory. It can take as long as one week for a typical furnace to be brought back to standard operating temperatures after a repair, which means a great deal of energy is lost during cool down and is used during reheating. MINTEQ® refractory systems enable our customers to produce more product at substantially lower energy rates. And, lower energy rates mean less fuel consumed, fewer pollutants released, and improved costs for our customers.
